Anticonvulsant activity of Artemisia nilagirica leaves

Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 9

Abstract

Ob j e c t i v e : The aim of the present study was to evaluate the anticonvulsant activity and neurotoxicity of methanol extract of Artemisia nilagirica leaf and its ethyl acetate fraction in mice. Methods: The anticonvulsant activities of ethanol extract and its ethyl acetate fraction were studied against maximal electroshock (MES) and pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced seizures in mice and neurotoxicity was determined using rotarod test. Re s u l t s : The duration of hindleg extension in MES test was reduced significantly (P< 0.001) by both methanol extract at higher dose level of 400 mg/kg and ethyl acetate fraction at the dose level of 200 and 400 mg/kg. In PTZ model, the seizure latency was prolonged by all the test groups. C o n c l u s i o n : Artemisia nilagirica leaf contains pharmacologically active substance(s) that may be valuable in the treatment of convulsive disorders, especially petit mal and grand mal seizures.
