Antiulcer activity of ethanolic extract of Lawsonia inermis against cold stress induced ulceration in wistar rats

Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 6

Abstract

The cause of ulceration in patients is mainly due to hyper secretion of gastric juice and also due to hyper secretion of pepsin. In traditional system of medicine a number of herbal preparations have been used for the treatment of peptic ulcers. The plant is reported to contain carbohydrates, proteins, flavonoids, tannins and phenolic compounds, alkaloids, terpenoids, quinones, coumarins, xanthones and fatty acids. The plant has been reported to have analgesic, hypoglycemic, hepatoprotective, immunostimulant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic, antitrypanosomal, antidermatophytic, antioxidant, antifertility, tuberculostatic and anticancer properties. The present study intended to evaluate the anti-ulcer activity was done in cold stress induced ulcer in Wistar rats by using ethanolic extract of Lawsonia inermis. The EELI showed significant reduction of gastric volume secretion, acidity and ulceration in cold stressed induced in rats at p<0.001.
