Application aspects of animal and human genomics
Journal Title: Acta Scientiarum Polonorum Zootechnica - Year 2014, Vol 13, Issue 2
Abstract
Currently, extensive investigations are being carried out in the area of mitochondrial genomics. Mitochondrial DNA is used in many fields of science, e.g. evolutionism, phylogeography, anthropology, archaeology, forensics, medical diagnostics, veterinary medicine, molecular ecology, population genetics, and animal breeding. Mitochondrial markers, haplotypes, or haplogroups are associated with pathogenesis of diseases, evolution and origin of organisms, and identification of species. An interesting direction based on mitochondrial DNA sequences is the research into polymorphisms/mutations that can be related to economically important utility traits of livestock. The use of mtDNA has drawbacks due to the low power of discrimination and pattern of inheritance. Still, mtDNA has many advantages as a marker; therefore, it is often used in both basic and applied research.

TIME OF LYING IN THE HORSE WITH REGARD TO ITS SEX AND SYSTEM OF MANAGEMENT
The objective of the study was to determine demands for lying in adult horse males and females, as well as in females maintained under various systems. 43 horses were studied in three centres. Time of lying was measured...
COMPARISON OF CARCASS COMPOSITION AND MEAT QUALITY IN FIVE-WEEK BROILER CHICKENS OF VARIOUS ORIGIN
The aim of the article has been to provide a comparison of the slaughter value and meat quality in five-week Hubbard Flex and Ross 308 broiler chickens. A higher body weight before slaughter (P ≤ 0.05), weight of eviscer...
COMPARISON OF GROWTH RATE AND BODY WEIGHT OF DUCKS OF DIFFERENT ORIGINS
The aim of the study was to compare growth rate and body weight of Pekin and Muscovy ducks and their hybrids (mulards). It was established that up to week 6 of life inclusive, Pekin ducks weighed more compared to Muscovy...
Changes in the body condition and daily milk yield of cows during lactation depending on the level of fat reserves before calving
The aim of the study was to analyse the effect of the level of fat reserves accumulated in the bodies of cows before parturition on changes in their body condition and daily yield after calving. The study was carried out...
Effect of certain factors on the longevity and culling of cows
This study involved 1072 Polish Holstein-Friesian cows that were raised in 12 farms of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie province and culled between 2000 and 2012. Statistical calculations accounted for the effect of certain factor...
