Application of Domestic Ammonium Perrhenate for Production of W-Re-Ni-Fe Heavy Alloys Intended for Armour-Piercing Kinetic Energy Penetrators
Journal Title: Problemy Mechatroniki. Uzbrojenie, lotnictwo, inżynieria bezpieczeństwa - Year 2013, Vol 4, Issue 2
Abstract
Experiments results connected to possibilities of use of the domestic ammonium perrhenate (NH4ReO4) produced by the Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals in Gliwice for obtaining W-Re-Ni-Fe heavy alloys were presented in the paper. Characteristic phenomena occurring in the sinters on the base of tungsten containing addition of rhenium (connected with so-called “rhenium effect”) were explained. This effect causes improvement of selected properties of these materials. Production process of investigated sinters was described. This process contains, among others, cold isostatic pressing and 2-staged sintering. Selected results of microstructure investigation and mechanical properties of obtained materials produced with addition of domestic ammonium perrhenate were presented. They were compared with properties of sinters produced with addition of imported ammonium perrhenate and also with classical heavy alloys (W-Ni-Fe). Moreover the selected results of final ballistics of kinetic energy penetrators made of investigated materials with addition of domestic ammonium perrhenate were described. These experiments were conducted with using of special ballistic stand for shell shooting. Results of penetration and also „selfsharpening effects” observed in some cases were described in the paper.
