Application of the maturity concept for assesment of development of compressive strength of concrete

Journal Title: Roads and Bridges - Drogi i Mosty - Year 2011, Vol 10, Issue 3

Abstract

The maturity method is a known technique to combine the effect of time and temperature at concrete hardening to evaluate strength growth in structural concretes. The theoretical basis of this technique is known since several decades, but quick and easy systems for effective applications have just recently been developed. The application of the maturity concept has lately been shown to be very effective for almost all structural concreting, which may be generally summarized as a rational way of gaining construction time with higher safety than old techniques like testing small specimens stored near the actual structure on-site. It is shown that the reduction of construction time to reach required strength demands can be reduced by more than 25% in most application cases. The modern systems involve both how to test and establish necessary data for arbitrary concrete mixes as well as using easy tools both to predict strength at the planning phase and during construction follow up the strength growth in the structural concrete in-place. As material data easily can be established for any concrete mix, the developed technique can preferably be used for so called green concretes with replacements of Portland cement with supplementary cementitions material to reduce the carbon footprint of the technology.
