Application of thermal imaging in the assessment of skin warming after classic massage and rubber cup massage

Journal Title: Complementary & Alternative Medicine in Science - Year 2013, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. In search of eff ective and economical methods of prevention and treatment of overload and pain syndromes of the musculoskeletal system, Complementary, Alternative and Traditional Medicine approaches are increasingly often the treatment of choice. Cupping massage has currently gained more popularity, however, there aren’t suffi cient studies confi rming its eff ect in the treatment of pain syndromes. The aim of this study was to compare the rise in temperature and to assess subjective reactions in the patients after classic and cupping massage therapy. Material and methods. The sample comprised 19 people aged 23–49 years (27.5 ± 7.6) with typical overloading of the lower back (sedentary lifestyle). They were subjected to a classic massage and after 7 days, to a cupping massage of the lower back. Changes in the skin temperature were recorded by measurement using a Thermo Vision A320G camera, immediately prior to and following each session. The assessment of subjective reactions and subjective well-being (SWB) was conducted after each type of massage using a tailored survey and the visual analogue scale (VAS). Results. The massage contributed to signifi cant diff erences in skin temperature, which was higher after each session (p < 0.001), while no signifi cant diff erences were found in temperature rise between the types of massage. The subjective assessment of intensity of rubber cup massage was higher compared with classic massage, as reported by 40% of the subjects, while the well-being and removal of lower back overloading pain were comparable after the two massages. Conclusions. Both cupping massage and classic massage result in tissue warming, although subjective assessment has revealed a higher intensity of the former. It may be an alternative approach to classic massage in prevention and treatment of the lower back overload.
