Applications of Layered Production in Aviation

Abstract

Additive Manufacturing techniques are receiving a considerable attention in recent years. Nowadays the digital manufacturing (3D printing, additive manufacturing or rapid prototyping) is mentioned as 3rd industrial revolution. Unlike the conventional method of material removing, this method which is applied by addition of materials is increasing rapidly in aerospace industry, (medical and automotive industry). Large aerospace companies, such as Boeing, GE Aviation, Airbus, Bell helicopters, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin are hard at work qualifiying additive manufacturing (AM) process and materials for flight. The companies manufacturing in aerospace industry mostly believes that AM presents a massive opportunity to create complex shapes, some of which would be impossible to manufacture using conventional methods, with different materials. Using AM techniques, materials can be fused to form objects from 3D models, building up structures iteratively instead of taking forgings and then machining material away. AM can produce highly complicated near-net-shape geometries with a good surface finish. By almost eliminating the machining process, can make great savings in cost and carbon emissions. Considering the advantages of this method, TAI engineers started to work for the future in this regard. It is planned to have AM equipment and perform process qualification at TAI, in order to use for some TAI design projects for the secondary structures in the first phase.
