APPROVAL, PRAISE, COMPLIMENT AND FLATTERY IN SPEECH ACT THEORY

Abstract
The article outlines approval, praise, compliment and flattery in terms of Speech Act Theory. The illocutionary aims of approval, praise, compliment and flattery speech acts have been differentiated.The author offers her own definitions of approval, praise, compliment and flatter as positive evaluative speech acts.The research has been carried out on the basis of Modern English artistic Discourse.The main purpose of the paper is to report on the carried out functional-semantic analysis of positive evaluative speech acts. The subjects of this study are approval, praise, compliment and flattery illocutionary aims. The main methods of investigating the data have been the contextual interpretational method as well as the conversational analysis. They have been helpful to determine the functional-semantic peculiarities of the taken speech acts, their objects and participants and their communicative structure. The article establishes the definition of approval, praise, compliment and flattery speech acts main and secondary illocutionary aims. The achieved results have practical value, since they can be discussed within the courses of Discourse Analysis and Communication Theory.
