Approximate cost of treatment the primary and/or secondary palate cleft in children

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2008, Vol 4, Issue 3

Abstract

Aim: the main purpose of this paper was a rough calculation of the annual cost of treatment of the population of Polish children suffering from CL and/or CP. Material and methods: in order to determine the said financial costs an approximate number of children at the age from 0 to 18 has been calculated, of those who had aforementioned defects in 2005. In the next step, a number of particular procedures has been assessed, which should be followed when treating children with CL and/or CP in 2005. The unit cost of sucprocedures has been calculated at the Specialist Medical Centre in Polanica Zdrój as well as at the Specialist Dental Clinic of the Medical Academy in Bytom. A rough analysis of annual financial cost of surgical and orthodontic treatment in children with clefts. Results: the analysis shows, that assessed annual cost of surgical treatment of children suffering from CL and/or CP was 4 710 150 zloty, while the cost of orthodontic treatment was 11 602 250 zloty in 2005. Conclusions: the financial means attributed by the National Health Fund for orthodontic treatment of children with maxillofacial defects are insufficient to also carry out the treatment of children with clefts. It should be determined how many children with anomalies other than clefts require the orthodontic treatment and how much such a treatment costs. When planning the amount of money required to cover the total cost of treatment in cleft palate cases, it should be taken under consideration that the annual cost of orthodontic therapy is higher than this of surgical procedures.
