Orthodontic management in case of partial impaction of permanent second molars in the mandible

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2017, Vol 13, Issue 3

Abstract

Disturbed eruption of second permanent molars in the mandible accounts only for 0.03% of all impacted teeth, but when present it is a great challenge for an orthodontist and a dental surgeon. Treatment methods can be orthodontic and/or surgical, depending on the degree of inclination of an impacted tooth, location of the third molar and desired mechanics of a tooth shift. Aim. The paper presents mechanics of uprighting impacted molars and clinical uses of a tip-back cantilever. Material and methods. Two cases where the tip-back cantilever had been successfully used were presented. Conclusions. The tip-back cantilever is an effective tool to upright molars and can be used even in difficult cases (with a horizontal position of the impacted teeth). (Sawicka M, Racka-Pilszak B, Wojtaszek-Słomińska A.
