Journal Title: ULUSLARARASI AFRO-AVRASYA ARAŞTIRMALARI DERGİSİ - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 4

Abstract

Turkey is the world leader in apricot production. The apricots, which is an important export product of Turkey, is mostly produced in Malatya Province. The main purpose of this research is to determine the attitudes, expectations, and problems of the producers regarding the production and marketing of apricots. For this purpose, face-to-face surveys were conducted with 119 apricots producers from Malatya province in 2016. The attitudes, expectations, and problems of producers on the production and marketing of apricots were examined using the 5-point Likert scale. The obtained data are interpreted by percentage and frequency tables. According to the results of the research, the average age of the producers is 47, 58.8% of them are primary school graduates, and 41.2% are high school graduates. Almost all of the producers (99.2%) stated that instead of producing more apricots, higher quality production should be realized, and production at world standards should be achieved. Producers claim that proper packaging and product diversification are needed in both domestic and foreign markets. The sulfur content of dried apricots is a problem for exports. The sulfur content should be reduced to meet international standards, and healthy sulfurization methods should be developed. The technological shortcomings of apricot production cause poor quality products and marketing issues. For this reason modern techniques should be applied to apricot production. The producers stated that the most important cause of the low yield in apricot is spring’s late frost. For this reason, new plantation areas should be established in accordance with changing climatic conditions. Gradually moving to new plantation is important in terms of productivity and quality. They also stated that they encountered various problems due to working workers in apricots gardens. The producers’ expectations of the state services include: application training on apricot production standards, maintaining apricot advertisements and promotions throughout the year, and removing barriers to exporting apricots.
