Are we prepared to transcend the boundaries of monolingualism?
Journal Title: Revista Cuarzo - Year 2016, Vol 22, Issue 1
Abstract
Multilingualism is represented by linguistic diversity not only in today’s society, but also beyond geographical boundaries in the global society. Rather than concentrating on how signifi cant polyglots are as active participants in the development of the global economy, the aim of this article is to examine the importance and inclusion of plurilingualism in preparing students for active and successful participation in a knowledgeable and innovative society, regardless of their professional fi eld. Learning a foreign language has become crucial for professional and personal development as it progresses to cognitive and critical understanding for cultural exchange. Just as the rapid development of technolo-gy causes continuous change, new paradigms and new disciplinary approaches that transcend linguistic and cultural parameters are creating different needs. Hence, it is important to consider whether we are preparing our students to overcome the barriers of monolingualism and whether we are responding to their communicative needs and challenges they face in a digital environment. This work presents in a systematic and generic way the new pedagogical approaches in the learning of foreign languages. It is a refl ection based on research, observations and critical analysis. In this con-text, major emphasis is to present and explain the Intercultural Approach, how it has developed and implemented under its theoretical principles in the language curriculum design. This framework gives us specifi c and clear parameters to achieve learning outcomes that are aligned with foreign language learners needs to deal with a pluricultural world.
