ARTISTIC TRANSFORMATION OF THE SUN’S IMAGE IN UKRAINIAN LITERATURE OF THE LATE 19th AND EARLY 20th CENTURIES

Abstract

The article focuses on the analysis of the aesthetic principles in the worldview of Ukrainians in the period of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The images of the sun and fire as dominant characters in local writers’ mythopoetic thinking of a specified period are analyzed; features of functionality and artistic transformation of the myths of the sun in the poetry of the early Ukrainian modernism are given. It has been identified that Hrytsko Chuprynka reproduced polysemantic image of the sun: the symbol of a happy life, the object of admiration. The sun as a source of happiness and inspiration for a lyrical character is presented in the poetry of Lesya Ukrainka. It should be emphasized that the poet particularly loved to paint the sunrise. The beginning of a new day for her appeared as a symbol of the awakening of all living things. Symbolically, the mythological image of the sun has been developed in the poems of Alexander Oles. Particular attention is paid to the image of the sun in the lyrics by M. Cherniavsky. It should be concluded that the poet used the mythological motif of the marriage of the sun and earth, through transformation of the sun’s image and its invariant – the symbol of fire – depicted the spiritual evolution of the lyrical character.
