SYMBOLOGY OF «SKARBNYTSIA POTREBNAIA» BY IOANYKII HALIATOVSKYI: INTERACTION OF ECCLESIASTICAL TRADITION AND FOLKLORE

Abstract
This article is an attempt to analyze the symbology of the collected narratives about miracles of Yeletska Mother of God which is called «Skarbnytsia Potrebnaia» («The Needful Treasury»). The book was written and published in 1676 in Novhorod-Siverskyi by one of the most talented and productive Ukrainian baroque writers Ioanykii Haliatovskyi. The aim of the research was to investigate creation of the refined symbolic sense of «Skarbnytsia Potrebnaia» made through the combination of ecclesiastical and folklore traditions in this text. The study is accomplished by applying comparative-historical, structural analysis, semiotics and myth-criticism. The novelty of the research consists in the analysis of the motif of building a temple and main images in which it is expanded. For example, images of builders, symbology of tree, stone, water, gladness, and music. According to the chosen approach, the connection between the motif of building a temple and the reproduction of the cosmic act of ordering the world is designated. Also in the process of analysis the correlation of the separate miracles with the apocryphal legends and songs about building a church is represented. The article is summarized with the defining the meaning of the analyzed motif to the symbology of treasury that decodes the whole text. This study helps to understand better the place of «Skarbnytsia potrebnaya» in Haliatovskyi’s creative work and can be used in further investigation of the Ukrainian baroque Marian narratives.
