Aspects of using languages in central regions of Ukraine

Abstract

Debates on the language question in Ukraine often act on the assumption of a dichotomy between Ukrainian and Russian. This does not cope with the coexistence of both languages in both society and the individual and neglects the existence of the so-called “surzhyk”, i.e. widespread Ukrainian-Russian mixed speech (URGR). On the basis of a survey from June/July 2014, this article investigates aspects of the distribution of these three codes in central areas of Ukraine. In analyses of the respondents’ declaration of their main used code, never used codes, their mono- or multilingualism, and their first language, this article by the large confirms the division of the whole central area of Ukraine into five sub-areas as proposed by Hentschel & Taranenko (2015). In three sub-areas, which make up the large centre of the area under investigation, Ukrainian has (with varying clarity) the strongest position, before URGR and Russian. Only in Sumy und Dnipropetrovsk URGR holds the strongest position, in Kharkiv - Russian. In other analyses (on the language of schooling, the evaluation of URGR as rather Ukrainian or Russian), there appears a division between Kharkiv and other sub-areas. All in all, these regional differences are certainly the most pronounced, whereas the influence of other socio-demographic aspects (sex, age and education) is of minor importance.
