Assessing Reciprocal Relation between Drug Abuse and Crime: a Cross-Sectional Study among Prisoners Kermanshah County, the west of Iran

Abstract

The one of fundamental problems of human society is crime that has many negative costs and consequences for the individual and the community. On the other one of the issues, threatening the security in society is drug abuse. The aim of the present study was determine the relationship between drug use and crime in Kermanshah city prisoners. This research was a cross-sectional study that performed by sampling method among 615 prisoners associated with murder, robbery and dispute in Kermanshah city prisoners by using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed by SPSS-21 by using appropriate statistical tests. The most frequent offenders were in the age group 21 to 30 years. The majority were unmarried and under diploma. 39.4% had a history of substance abuse, and 41.8% had a history of high-risk sexual behavior. Opium and crystal were most in abuse. The most abuse significantly in dispute was consumption of alcohol and in robbery was crack. Between age, marital status, parents' drug abuse and crime, drug abuse and crime in near friends and injection addiction in various crimes were significantly differences. With regard to the relationship between drug use and crime and the most frequent offenders were in the youth age group with under diploma education therefore, preventive measures more should be done in this group. According to the high prevalence of risky sexual behavior in these offenders can be named them as a susceptible group of morbidity and transmitted sexually diseases.
