ASSESSMENT OF HAND GRIP STRENGTH FOLLOWING MASTECTOMY IN WOMEN TAKING PART IN MOTOR REHABILITATION

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2010, Vol 26, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. The aim ofthis study was to assess the changes in ofhand grip strength among post mastectomy women, analyse them during rehabilitation and specify the relation between adjuvant therapy and the examined variable.Materiał and methods. The sample included 94 women who underwent breast sur-gery due to breast cancer Among them, we selected 23 women after mastectomy who regularly participated in motor rehabilitation actMties during the 2 years'period. Hand grip strength hand grip was measured using a hand dynamometer The examinations were carried out five times in six-month inten/als.Results. The results of the examinations show statistically significant differences between the hand grip strength in the involved and uninvolved upper limb. Among the women who underwent adjuvant therapy, an impairment of hand grip strength was noted in the involved extremity The differences in hand grip strength values, obtained for the involved limb during a two-year examination turned out to be statistically insignificant.Conclusions. The mastectomy and adjuvant therapy had an adverse effect on hand grip strength in the involved limb. The subjects' participation in rehabilitation actMties did not significantly increase hand grip strength in the involved limbs as compared with the initial study results. It results from sparing the involved limb which was included in the exercise methodology.
