Assessment Of Male Sexuality Problems In An Urban Slum Of Mumbai, India
Journal Title: International Journal of Medical and Health Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 1
Abstract
Introduction: Policy makers, programme planners, researchers and health advocates alike have recognized that men’s reproductive health and their sexual behaviour have direct effects on women’s health as well as on their own health needs. The introduction of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), including HIV, into the framework of reproductive health care provision has necessitated the incorporation of men, usually as ‘responsible partners’, in service delivery and interventions. So the present study is carried out to assess the sexuality problems in male population in an urban slum of Mumbai. Materials and Methodology: A community based descriptive epidemiological study was conducted at Shivaji Nagar urban slum which is a field practice area of the department of Preventive and Social Medicine, TN Medical College, Mumbai. 400 male participants between 15 to 45 years of age were included in this study. The information was gathered by personal interview using semi-structured pro forma. Results: Out of 400 subjects 128(32%) male gave h/o sexual exposure to person other than their legal partner. 98(76.6%) experienced multiple sexual exposures. Subjects who were diagnosed of sexual health problems (SHPs), 38 (22.4%) had contact SHPs, 98(57.6%) had non-contact SHPs and 34 (20%) had both contact and non-contact SHPs. Urethral discharge was the most common contact SHP. Conclusion: Male sexual health concerns should be given as much as importance to female sexual health problems. Non-contact SHPs should be given as much as importance and attention that of contact SHPs. There is an unmet need for comprehensive male sexual health services rather than exclusive STI management services.
