Assessment of strenght of titanium miniplates used for mandibular angle fractures osteosynthesis
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 12
Abstract
Introduction: There are several techniques of fixingbony fragments in the angular region of the mandible by means of miniplates. In certain cases the immobilizing element itself can become damaged through fracture.Aim of the study: To assess the strength of titanium miniplates used for stable osteosynthesis of angular fracture of the mandible as related to their number and placement.Materials and methods: Acrylic resin models of the mandible were used to perform four different types of osteosynthesis of angular fractures by means of one or two miniplates. A handle was designed to transfer the osteosynthesis configurationstoQ-test10 machine used for the experimental assessment of the resistance of individual types of osteosynthesis. Results: The most durable miniplate setup appeared to be osteosynthesis technique with two miniplates on the lateral surface of the mandible. Conclusions: The study revealed the differences in the strength of fixation depending on the applied osteosynthesis technique.
