ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF WETTABILITY ON TRIBOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF TEXTURED SURFACES

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2012, Vol 243, Issue 3

Abstract

Laser surface texturing is currently the most advanced manufacturing technique used to produce microcavities (grooves, dimples, chevrons, and others) on the surface of machine elements, which can be done in a repeated manner, quickly, and economically. The creation of surface texture is primarily aimed at reducing friction coefficients and the wear of contact surfaces. Many works indicate that surface texturing increases seizure resistance and fretting wear resistance, and it is generally used where adhesive properties of surface layers are important (binding materials, applying coatings, printing techniques, layers with biologically and chemically active surfaces, etc.). The work is an attempt to link, using the options offered by Statistica software package, selected parameters of the topography of textured surface to its surface energy and tribological properties. The results obtained make it possible to state, among others, that the parameters of the surface texture which affect the value of the fluid friction coefficient to the greatest extent are the values of free surface energy, a degree of blackening (Sp), and the distances between edges of microcavities (L-d).
