ASSESSMENT OF THE NUTRITIONAL PATTERNS IN SHOOTING PRACTITIONERS
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 3
Abstract
Background. Adequate nutrition is an important element of the training cycle of competitors. The aim of this paper is the assessment of nutrition patterns in shooting athletes. Material and methods. The sample comprised 28 shooters from 3 clubs located in Krakow and Tarnow. The subjects’ mean age was 18 years (the range - 15-23years) and the mean BMI was 21 kg/m 2 (the range - 18-26 kg/m 2 ). Assessment of nutritional patterns was performed using a survey from the last 24 hours in three selected weekdays, in autumn 2009 and spring 2010. Results. The assessed diets of the studied athletes were characterized by an insufficient supply of energy, carbohydrates, dietary fibre and fats. The consumption of protein, in turn, was higher than the recommended intake. Despite the deficiency of nutrients in the daily diets of the shooters, it was found that percentage of energy derived from carbohydrates, fats and proteins, amounting to ~55%, ~29% and ~16% respectively was adequate. The supply of vitamins A, C, B 6 and B 12 in diets was generally higher than the reference values while the supply of vitamin E and folic acid was insufficient. Athletes consumed sodium, phosphorus and copper in amounts exceeding the recommended intake values. The consumption of potassium and magnesium, in turn, was insufficient in these subjects and the females did not meet their demand for iron, supplying their bodies with too low amounts of this nutrient with their daily diets. Conclusions. The nutritional errors found in the study subjects indicate that the athletes’ diets should be modified by increasing the percentage of wholemeal grain foods, dry pulse seeds, milk and dairy products, vegetable oils, oily sea fish, vegetables and fruit and by limiting the intake of smoked meat and other foods that are high in phosphorus.
