Abstract

Background. The number of sports injuries in children and youth has increased several times over the recent several years and now it makes about 10% of all accidents, proving the seriousness of the issue. Material and methods. The study was conducted among 285 secondary school children from schools in the Miechów district, aged 13-16 years. The participants of the experiment were divided into two groups: the first group comprised of 180 boys, the other one – 105 girls. The children come from different urban and rural environments. The research tool was a questionnaire containing the basic data of the participants and 11 questions referring to the subject of the paper. Results. The most common injuries among young sportspeople were: bruising, twisting and injuries of soft tissue, which occurred mostly in the first year of practicing sports. The disciplines which resulted in the highest number of injuries were: volleyball, basketball; the fewest injuries were noted in athletics. Most of the injuries took place in the starting period and the main part of training. Conclusions. Extensive epidemiological studies of sports injuries can provide coaches and sports doctors with the basis for developing a model of preventive procedures.
