Atherogenic lipid indices in chronic renal failure patients
Journal Title: International Journal Of Research In Medicine - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 4
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Chronic renal failure (CRF) is attributing to increased morbidity and mortality worldwide. Elevations of various forms of lipids in CRF lead to cardiovascular complications. CRF patients require hemodialysis (HD) depending on the severity of disease. AIMS: The study was aimed to estimate and compare various lipid parameters and atherogenic lipid indices in CRF patients. MATERIAL & METHODS: Total 120 age and sex matched subjects were enrolled and divided into 3 groups (Gr): Gr-I healthy controls (40), Gr-II CRF patients managed conservatively (40) and Gr-III CRF patients on HD for more than 6 months (40). After taking informed consent, 5 ml fasting blood samples were collected and measured for lipid profile parameters like total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL). Calculated parameters were very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), non-HDL and atherogenic lipid indices (TG/HDL, TC/HDL, LDL/HDL and non-HDL/HDL). RESULTS: Levels of TGs, VLDL were significantly increased and HDL were significantly decreased in both Gr-II and III as compared to Gr-I (p<0.001). Level of non-HDL was significantly higher in Gr-II (p<0.05). All atherogenic lipid indices were significantly increased in both Gr-II and III as compared to Gr-I (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Our study concluded that hypertriglyceridemia, raised VLDL & non-HDL, reduced HDL and increased atherogenic lipid indices create risk for cardiovascular complications in CRF patients managed conservatively or by HD.
