Barriers to patent activity of high-tech small and medium-sized enterprises in Poland

Abstract
One of the major challenges for innovative companies is to ensure the effectiveprotection their own solutions against too rapid imitation by competitors. This can be achieved,among others, through legal instruments, in particular - to patent protection. Unfortunately,for many enterprises access to such instruments of protection can be severely limited.This problem concerns especially high-tech small and medium-sized enterprises. The aimof this paper is identification and prioritization of barriers limiting the patent activity ofhigh-tech SMEs in Poland. In the study the results of surveys conducted in 2012 amongintentionally selected group of 50 high technology SMEs were used. Time range of researchcovered the period 2009-2011, while the spatial extent – Polish territory.
