Baseline Characteristics and Risk Factors for Retinal Vein Occlusions

Abstract

The study was undertaken to study the demographic characteristics and risk factors of Retinal Vein Occlusions in patients attending Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Hyderabad. The medical records of consecutive patients with retinal vein occlusions who presented to the Retina clinic of Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital over a period of 21 months were retrieved. Information extracted from the data included the demographic profile of the patients, history of systemic diseases, comprehensive eye examination findings and relevant investigations done. The data were statistically evaluated using the Wilcoxon signed rank test, Mann-Whitney test and t tests wherever applicable. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant. The total number of cases seen over 21 months period were 208, comprising 2.5 % of new cases of RVO. This was 31% of CRVO and 69% of BRVO. Advancing age, diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemias were the important systemic risk factors. Hypertension was statistically significant. Conclusion: Identifying the risk factors and treating them could reduce the incidence of RVO.
