BATYR IN THE KAZAKH EPIC AS A HERO ARCHETYPE: THEORIES OF A. MARGULAN AND MODERN RESEARCHERS

Journal Title: UNKNOWN - Year 2024, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

The article presents the image of the hero in the Kazakh heroic epic from the point of view of the archetypes` theory and the concept of academician Alkey Margulan. We have established forms of representation of the cultural archetype “batyr” as an element of the Kazakh cultural unconscious, affecting modern patterns of Kazakhs` behavior. Contemporary researchers argue that the archetypal nature of batyrs in the nomadic culture is expressed through the existence of the social institution of batyrship “batyrshyldyk”, which has evolved over many centuries among the Turkic peoples. The archetype of a batyr in Kazakh culture possesses several characteristics: he is characterized by physical strength, military art, belongs to the warrior caste, protects the people from invaders, he is always accompanied by a horse, and usually beside him is his wife – a friend and wise adviser. The perception of a batyr as a warrior who single-handedly confronts enemies and defeats them through his martial art skills is outdated today. Batyr is a representative of the Turkic warrior caste, for which war was a hereditary profession. This interpretation of the hero archetype – the batyr – belongs to the most contemporary theories, continuing the ideas of Alkey Margulan
