Causes of occurrence of pain complaints concerning musculoskeletal system among farmers in relation with the occupation performed
Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2014, Vol 20, Issue 4
Abstract
introduction. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are the most frequent work-related disorders occurring in Europe, and concern millions of employees. This is mainly pain in the back, neck, and shoulders, as well as injuries and complaints concerning the upper extremities, commonly called injuries resulting from chronic overload of the body. objective. The objective of the study is the presentation and analysis of the current state of knowledge of the causes of occurrence of pain complaints on the part of the musculoskeletal system among farmers in relation with the occupation performed. state of knowledge. A review of the results of studies by other researchers (13 reports) showed that the farmers examined considerably more often reported low back pain (LBP) than pain concerning the remaining segments of the motor system (neck, shoulders, upper segment of the spine and knees). These complaints occurred considerably more frequently among farmers than in the control group (statistically significant differences). According to the results of studies by other researchers, the following factors significantly correlate with pain complaints: loading with moderate or severe physical effort, long-lasting sitting position, uncomfortable position at work, number of hours of field work, period of employment, poor physical efficiency, and exposure to whole body vibration. summing up. It is necessary to undertake proper actions in order to decrease the frequency of occurrence of disorders in the musculoskeletal system, by continuing mechanization of agricultural work, and designing the workplace of agricultural tractor operators which would satisfy ergonomic standards, and reduce the level of whole body vibration.
