Benign lesions of the oral cavity mucosa in a five-month old infant – a case report
Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2014, Vol 10, Issue 3
Abstract
A case report of a five-month old infant patient was presented with benign lesions of the maxillary dental ridge. Such lesions of the oral cavity mucosa are frequently found in newborns and are of a transient character. They usually present as multiple, smooth, yellowish, or whitish keratinfilled cysts. They are painless. They usually rupture spontaneously and the cyst lining fuses with the overlying mucosa without leaving traces. However, they cause parents’ concern, who frequently present the infant to a paediatrician or a dentist in order to determine the cause of such lesions. These are frequently mistaken for congenital or neonatal teeth. The infant was five months old during the examination. A few lesions were observed on the left maxillary dental ridge. They were found on the anterior side of the gingiva in the 61 – 63 tooth area. The nodules were small, 1-2 mm in diameter, of hard compactness, with no inflammation features. The lesions were diagnosed as Bohn’s nodules. According to the mother, they were already present at the infant’s birth and had not caused any pain. For that reason, it was decided not to implement any treatment. (MielnikBłaszczak M, Pels E, Pietrak J, Maślanko M.
