Between control and autonomy – institutional conditions of life of social welfare home residents with intellectual disabilities

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to present characterized by a peculiar ambivalence, a system of institutional care for people with intellectual disabilities. The whole reasoning is based on two main categories: control and subordination versus autonomy and independence. Each of them is associated with one of the two main perspectives perceive nursing home. The first, derived from the Erving Goffman’s total institution in which a man is treated as an object of others’ actions, exposing the situation of isolation and dependence. The second perspective, represents a model of the relationship of staff and pupils, characterized by an individualistic approach to the needs of a disabled person, respecting their right to autonomy and self-determination. The confrontation of these two perspectives and areas of problems and the negative consequences that makes assume the role of resident of a social welfare home, is contemplated in this article.
