Between Military Operation and Expedition – Modern Dimensions of Expedition Potential of Military Contingent Forces in Republic of Iraq

Abstract
Due to significant changes in the global security environment and the mutual dependency of states’ domestic and foreign policies, the operational strategy of armed forces cannot be associated only with the art of distributing and employing military means. Moreover, there is no one proper way of planning the operations of armed forces in an alliance or multinational coalition. Due to the globalization, there is a need for specific procedures and responses to threats. Modern military operations carried out abroad take place in a rapidly developing global environment. Their multinational character was the trigger to reevaluate the views on security and defense in the context of use and operations of armed forces. A large number of emergency response operations also contributed to the number of entities involved in the execution of both military and non-military task. The analyses conducted showed that the expedition potential should be considered in the context of expeditionary forces and expeditionary operations. The key factor here is the potential required to conduct expeditionary operations. It should be understood as having the necessary powers and resources including the skills and abilities to achieve the intended goal. In order to conduct expeditionary operations one must possess expeditionary forces able to execute and sustain multinational expeditionary operations abroad.
