Xenophobic Attitudes in Poland. Accounts of the Paris Terrorist Attack in „Gazeta Wyborcza”

Journal Title: Chorzowskie Studia Polityczne - Year 2015, Vol 10, Issue

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the coverage that the terrorist attack of November 2015 received in Poland’s major daily newspaper “Gazeta Wyborcza”. The underlying research involved an analysis of more than 70 articles published in the week following the event. The analysis revealed that the articles were not so much concerned with providing succinct information on the dramatic developments in France as on reporting xenophobic attitudes of Polish people from different regions of the country. Apparently, for a number of Poles, the terrorist attack served as a pretext (or justification) for aggressive behaviors toward the followers of Islam. The incidents clearly demonstrated that hate speech towards Muslims continues to prevail among Polish people.
