Between the picture and the sound. Inspirations by the work of Francisco Goya in Goyescas by Enrique Granados
Journal Title: Notes Muzyczny - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
The merging of painting and music and the relations between these two areas are very interesting issues. Even though the concept of correspondence of arts has been known for a long time, still not enough attention is devoted to it. The aim of the article is an attempt to describe the connections existing between the work of Francisco Goya and Piano Suite Goyescas by Enrique Granados. The author shows how important the role of inspirations by visual arts was in the creative process of the Spanish composer. The article also includes a description of music means with which Enrique Granados transferred his visual interests into the sphere of sounds. The analysis consists of three parts. The first part presents a biographical outline and periods of creative output of Granados which the author attempts to categorize. The second one describes the Piano Suite Goyescas, i.e., the structure and origin of the piece. The last, third part familiarizes the reader with the creative output of Francisco Goya – it depicts the main directions of the artist’s activity and elaborates on his selected works. It also points to the relations existing between the painting of the Aragon master and the music by Granados. The presented analysis has a character of comparative research. The author juxtaposed selected painting works with the separate pieces being part of the suite by Enrique Granados in order to find analogies. The drawn up characterization confirmed the author’s initial assumption that the visual interests of the Spanish composer played a significant role in his creative work. Marta Łysyganicz also noticed that both music and visual representations are characterized by a rich colour scheme of moods. As the author stresses, the presented topic deserves further and wider research as the article is only a general outline of the problem. Performing more in-depth observations could bring a lot of additional information about the suite Goyescas and help performers read the composer’s intentions as to how to interpret the separate pieces more accurately.
