Abstract

Over the last century, aviation has made a large, abrupt technological progress. Such progress would not be possible without the parallel achievements in raising safety standards by controlling and reducing risks which may occur in aviation. Given the diversity of threats in aviation, people associated with it sought to prevent aviation accidents from the very beginning. Through the implementation of the best practices in safety management, there was a significant decrease in the frequency and the size of the tragic events in aviation. Although the elimination of accidents and serious incidents is not only desirable, but necessary to achieve, providing 100% security level is unattainable. Equipment failures and human errors will still continue to occur, despite all the efforts to prevent them. Furthermore, no action taken by a man or a man-made system will be completely secure, which means free from risk. Safety is a relative term, but risks in the,,safe” system should be reduced to the possibly lowest level in order to be acceptable. The aim of this article is to analyze some of the risks in aviation and present methods of risk reduction. It also depicts contemporary theories of the causes of air accidents and their use in management of operational risk.
