BIBLICAL ALLUSIONS OF THE ENGLISH MEDIA DISCOURSE OF THE USA AND WAYS OF THEIR TRANSLATION INTO THE UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract
The article is devoted to the investigation of biblical allusions used in the English media discourse of the USA. The definitions of such notions as allusion and biblical allusion are given, ways of their translation into the Ukrainian language are clarified in the article. Allusion is viewed by linguists either as a stylistic device or a fi gure of speech that makes indirect reference to a well-known fact, event, name, expression or hint at it. Biblical allusions are indirect or direct references to the Bible, its fragments, lines. Biblical allusions are widely used in the English media discourse of the USA, represented by oral and written texts, created by journalists and other specialists of the media sphere. Biblical allusions help to create vivid images, contribute to expressivity of media texts. The translation of biblical allusions requires knowledge of the Bible and its texts. Such knowledge is necessary for identification and decoding of allusive units, used in the USA media discourse. The translation of these units into the Ukrainian language is done by their lexical equivalents and calques, with the help of such translation transformations as adding and omission.
