Propaganda and spying at the Lower Danube. The case of the foreign consulates (1930–1940)

Abstract

This study aims to present the evolution of propaganda and sabotage activities before WWII, made by the foreign consuls from the Lower Danube. The exchanging of goods on the Danubian market was influenced by a series of economical, fiscal and political factors. The political and economical aggression at the Lower Danube and the indifference of France and Great Britain (in the context of the Munich episode, September 1938) forced Romania accept some compromises at the Danube River. The Sulina channel was still the only way of access of commercial ships to and from the Danubian ports.
