Abstract
Sweatshops at sea de Illinois en Chicago y destacado referente dentro del campo de la historia es el último libro de Leon Fink, profesor de la Universidad de los trabajadores en los Estados Unidos. Fink, nacido en 1948, obtuvo su grado en Harvard, fue estudiante de E.P. Thompson en la Universidad de Warwick, a fnes de los años 60, y de Herbert Gutman en la Universidad de Rochester, donde se doctoró en 1977. Si bien este es su primer libro en el campo de la historia marítima, su interés por los estudios comparativos y transnacionales no se inaugura con esta obra: también en 2011 editó una compilación titulada Workers Across the Americas: The Transnational Turn in Labor History (Oxford University Press) y en 2003 había analizado la experiencia de los migrantes latinos contemporáneos en The Maya of Morganton: Work and Community in the Nuevo New South (University of North Carolina Press). Fink es actualmente el editor de Labor: Studies in Working Class History of the Americas, una de las revistas académicas más importantes dentro del campo de estudios de la historia obrera, surgida en 2003 como producto de una división en el comité editorial de Labor History, otra de las más importantes publicaciones de los EE.UU., de la cual él mismo había sido editor hasta entonces.
