Coastal human occupations of the La Plata River area at Maldonado (Uruguay). First approaches

Abstract

This paper reports preliminary results of an archaeological research at the west coast of Maldonado estate, on the La Plata River area. The region holds diverse archaeological fndings but very few systematic investigations. Its geography is characterized by an environmental continuity from mountain range to coast, where different human occupation evidences were located. Background studies included the record of previous archaeological reports and publications as well as ethno-historic documents, and the survey of private and public archaeological collections. A feld survey was carried out, locating surface archaeological sites on different ecosystems. Erosion, urban growth and other activities associated with the touristic development of the area were verifed during the feld survey. These activities and processes destroyed archeological sites referred in previous reports, and represent a threat for the conservation of other archaeological sites. This paper emphasizes the preliminary nature of this approach, and suggests the need for further research to improve the knowledge of local prehistory and contribute to regional models. It also points some necessary actions to defne strategies with other stakeholders attending to the intense urban and touristic growth of the area that represents a threat for the conservation of its cultural heritage.
