Strike on board: the origins of FOM in 1910 and revolutionary syndicalism

Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2012, Vol 5, Issue 11

Abstract

Within the Argentine working class, maritime workers constituted a particular and signifcant group. Strategic activity and its own process of trade union organizing since the end of the 19th century and the establishment of one of the frst trade union federations of national scope in the following century were some of the highlights of its history. The creation of the Maritime Workers’ Federation (acronym in Spanish, FOM) was the corollary of a particular political and trade union experience. The current historiography debate of the relationships between the State and Unions is particularly relevant for the case of maritime workers and their relation to the governments of the Radical party in Argentina. Based on this relationship, this research aims to study the particular organizing and political experience of maritime workers through their sectoral strikes and the formation of unions, paying particular attention to the strike at the beginning of 1910, immediately prior to the foundation of FOM. Through the analysis of bibliographic material, trade union newspapers, political and commercial pamphlets, as a vital element of this experience, the study will focus on the political-syndical tendency of this workers group: the Revolutionary Syndicalism.
