CANVAS OF GALLIPOLI

Abstract

In the 17th century, local canvas producers under the auspices of the Ottoman state were in a position to compete with European industrialists. The Gallipoli people have maintained have woven canvas for hundreds of years despite the diminishing state support and the technological advances of European industry. They competed with the Europeans in this site in spite of the high cost. In this study, canvas of Gallipoli which accepted that superiority analyzed in terms of its historical development including its first appearance in the town, development and disappearance. In addition, information was given about the vessels which canvas were used during the Ottoman period. Purpose of working; it is to evaluate the canvas woven in Gelibolu with the information obtained from the sources and to point to attention once again to the importance.
