Car first-aid kit and its role in the provision of first aid. Evaluation of the state of knowledge among young beginner drivers

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2012, Vol 18, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction: Time for undertaking effective actions which restore the basic life functions of a road accident victim is short – 4-5 minutes. An early performance of the most important first aid procedures may save the lives of many victims of accidents. While providing this aid, one’s own safety and the safety of the victim must be borne in mind while using the medical products available, including means for personal protection (disposable gloves, mouth-to- mouth resuscitation mask). These should all be included in the first aid kit. Objective: To investigate the state of knowledge of young beginner drivers concerning regulations in the matter of equipping passenger cars with a first aid kit, its composition and use by road traffic participants.Materials and methods: The study was carried out among road traffic participants during the period 2 – 28 May 2011 in the city of Lublin, and covered 224 respondents – 126 males and 98 females – aged 18 – 28. The research instrument was a self-designed questionnaire form, the construction of which was preceded by an analysis of the relevant literature. The results obtained were statistically analyzed using the software package STATISTICA v. 7.1.Results: The majority of respondents reported that in Poland there is an obligation to possess a car first aid kit; at the same time, les than a half of them possessed such a kit. More than a half of the respondents mentioned that the law regulates the contents of the first aid kit, but only 30% of them had knowledge concerning what the kit should contain. Conclusion: In many cases, the first aid provided before the arrival of the medical emergency team decides about the success in specialist treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to educate drivers already from the moment of training in first aid concerning the necessity to equip a passenger care with a first aid kit, and what benefits it can bring in an emergency situation.Key words: first aid kit, first aid, beginner driver, regulations concerning the possession and equipping of a first aid kit
