Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2008, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
Any historical deliberation of the urban populations of the Cantabrian cornice in the low Middle Ages and the Modern epoch has to depart necessarily from the overcoming of the demographic frames. The weakness of the process of urbanization in these territories does not invalidate the importance that the port villas acquire in the structure of this region. These small towns acquire functions that equal to the big urban agglomerations of Europe and of the own Spain at that time. Undoubtedly, they present themselves as a particular model of the process of urbanization in the north territories of the kingdom of Castile. The present article tries to highlight these proper characteristics of the “urban world” across one of the most signifcant port villas of the urban Cantabrian system: Castro Urdiales’s villa.
