CAUSALITY AND SUBJECTIVITY CORRELATION IN DISCOURSE

Abstract

The paper under discussion deals with two fundamental discourse principles: Causality and Subjectivity. Both of them account for causal coherence and connectives choice, thus playing a pivotal role in cognition. Causality is interpreted as Situation-Evaluation fundamental relation type, covering Logical Seuence (condition-result, means-purpose, cause-effect, reason-conclusion) and Matching (contrast: concession-conseuence; combinability) relations. In the language / speech those relations are represented with connectives or lexical signals. Taking into account the fact that Situation-Evaluation includes two facets of the world perception (cognition/knowledge and thinking-opinion), both Logical Seuence and Matching relations are characterized with subjectivity. A subjective form of cognition (=it is a man (a subject) who cognates the world) determines subjectivity presence in the cognition process. It means that knowledge content of a subject doesn’t depend upon him but objectively reects the actual world. It is important to remember that the actual worlds can differ for different subjects, thus being subjective. The abovementioned doesn’t prove the statement of solipsism as for objective world uniue existence in an individual consciousness. It is argued that the actual / objective world cognition, textual inclusive, is subjective. Also it is a subject / an individual who chooses certain language means to represent causal relations (i.e. Logical Seuence and Matching relations) in a text / discourse. Thus, it is Causality and Subjectivity which determine the system of causal relations and inuence their language expression. Due to these discourse principles implementation it is possible to explain discourse connectives choice complexity in the language acuisition and discourse processing.
