Change of Anthropometric and Hormonal Indices in Adolescents (Boys) with Slow Somatic and Sexual Development against Therapy

Abstract

The hormonal indices, particularly average level of TSH, free thyroxine (р < 0.05) have been significantly improving after 3, 6 and 12 months of treatment with potassium iodide (100, 150 мg/day) and levothyroxine (25, 50 мg/day) in patients with iodine deficiency disorders and low sexual development. Baseline rate of growth in patients with iodine deficiency disorder and low sexual development was 5.3 ± 0.2 cm/yr, after 12-month treatment that index was 6.3 ± 0.3 cm/yr (6.6–9.6 cm/yr) and average gain in growth was 8.1 ± 0.4 cm. Conclusions: potassium iodide and levothyroxine containing therapy in patients with iodine deficiency disorder and low sexual development improves both hormonal and anthropometric indices that confirms the necessity of primary prevention of iodine deficiency disorders in children and adolescents.
