Journal Title: Ekonomika ir Vadyba: Aktualijos ir Perspektyvos - Year 2013, Vol 32, Issue 4

Abstract

Research problem of the article is formulated as the following question: how are individualistic motives (in aspect of benefits) regarding participation in activities of CSOs expressed and what tendency of changes in individualistic motives is identified in empirical researches in Lithuania? Research aim is to analyse/reveal changes in individualistic motives to participate in CSOs in the aspect of benefits. Research objectives are: 1. To provide a theoretical review of individualistic motives to participate in CSOs in the aspect of benefits. 2. To reveal empirical facts regarding individualistic motives to participate in CSOs by comparing results of research carried out by Tijūnaitienė in 2007 with results of similar research carried out by other scientists in 2008-2013, focusing on social-demographic characteristics. Research logic. Most of the results of the research carried out by Tijūnaitienė in 2007 are presented in publications by Tijunaitiene and Balciunas (2010), Tijunaitiene and Bersenaite (2011), Tijunaitiene, Neverauskas and Balciunas (2009a, b). Therefore, this article presents only the data revealed in the course of dissertation research but not presented in the said publications; however, these data are compared to results of research by other scholars and evaluated against changes until 2013 The making of the present article involved multiple stages. First, some of the results discussed in this article have been taken from empirical research carried out by Tijūnaitienė in 2007 and based on mutual incentives theory proposed by Simmons and Birchall (it is described in detail in Tijūnaitienė et al., 2009; Tijunaitiene, Balciunas, 2010). The mentioned publications present results of part of the research that involved questioning 987 respondents, which are related to motivation of citizens of Lithuania (individualistic and collectivistic motives) and intentions to participate in CSO activities. Second, results of the empirical research carried out in 2007 were interpreted and compared with the research of the recent five years (e.g., Gedvilienė, Karasevičiūtė, 2012; Gerulaitis et al., 2011; Gudauskas, 2010; Guščinskienė, Čiburienė, 2010; Januškevičiūtė, Čepulkauskienė, 2012; Paužuolienė, Mauricienė, 2012; Pilkauskaitė–Valickienė, Žukauskienė, 2013 etc.) to find similarities and changes. Keywords: civil society organizations, participation, individualistic motives.
