CHANGES IN THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF A STEEL SURFACE DURING FRICTION

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2011, Vol 238, Issue 4

Abstract

The primary objective of this work was to investigate the chemical composition of the sliding surfaces during tribological tests with the participation of lubricants based on mineral oil SAE 30/95 and selected AW/EP additives containing sulphur and phosphorus. Standard parameters – limiting wear of load (Goz) and scuffing load (Pt) – were measured by means of a specialised four-ball machine T-02 (made in Institute for Sustainable Technologies in Radom). Tribological tests were carried out during a linear increase of load (P). Some experiments were paused before (P = Pt – 400 N) and after reaching scuffing load (P = Pt + 400 N). To investigate in detail sliding steel surfaces, the researchers used analytical techniques including FTIRM, SEM/EDS, and FTIRM. Results indicate that some organic products of tribochemical conversions of the lubricant were present on the steel surface before the breakdown of lubrication layer. There were no organic compounds on the rubbing surface when load was equal or higher than Pt (then chemical structure of the surface was modified – increase of the content of oxygen, carbon and active elements coming from additives).
