Channel Estimation with Extended Kalman Filter for Fading Channels
Journal Title: International Journal of Electronics Communication and Computer Technology - Year 2013, Vol 3, Issue 5
Abstract
Channel estimation is simply defined as the process of characterizing the effect of the physical channel on the input sequence. They may or may not contain the transmission of a training sequence. Data based channel estimation methods offer low complexity and good performance and are thus quite widely used in communications systems today. But they are also wasteful of bandwidth since they use training sequences to estimate the channel. So here, a method is used where the limited length of training sequence is transmitted. This method is based on an Extended Kalman Filter which can be used efficiently for channel estimation procedure. The Extended Kalman Filter based channel estimator leads to a significant gain in performance as compared to the data-only estimator. This filter also allows us to predict the state of the system before the frame is actually received. In this project, the channel estimation is done using Extended Kalman Filter to predict the estimates of the state of system. Also the total harmonic distortion of the updated state is calculated and limited within a particular value. The channel under consideration is a Rayleigh fading channel.
