Journal Title: Вісник Житомирського державного університету імені Івана Франка - Year 2017, Vol 85, Issue 1
Abstract
The article deals with the comparative analysis of the original Chinese detective work with the novel in translation which was carried out by the European Orientalist Robert van Gulik. The aim of the article is to contrast the European novel in translation and the original Chinese work of preclassical period of detective genre in order to find out their principal differences and common points. Stuff for the article is the adventurous heroic novel by Chinese story-teller Shi Yukun ''The Three Heroes and Five Gallants'', the novel in translation ''Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee'' by the Dutch researcher of Chinese culture Robert van Gulik and memoir of the chief of Saint Petersburg criminal investigation police Ivan Dmitrievich Putilin. The comparative analysis of the European novel in translation and the original Chinese novel which was carried out has shown that the European novel in translation carries the features of rather pastiche than original Chinese novel as the translator had the aim to attach the character of classical English detective to his work while the original Chinese novel is focused on the description of social evolution and functioning rather than on description of logical and analytical search of the criminal which are typical for classical detective works, the main features of which inherits the European novel in translation. At the same time Russian and Chinese preclassical detectives have common points. The results of the research can be used while preparing lecture courses on Chinese and European literature, for social and culturological researches and also for translational text analysis (the novel by Robert van Gulik).
