CIRCADIAN DISRUPTION IN SHIFT WORK AND RISK OF HORMONE-RELATED CANCERS
Journal Title: Българско списание за обществено здраве (Bulgarian Journal of Public Health) - Year 2010, Vol 0, Issue 1
Abstract
The night shift work may lead to disruption of circadian rhythms and may alter the endocrine function, possibly the regulation of reproductive hormones, that are relevant to the etiology of hormone-related cancer diseases. In October 2007 the International Agency for Research on Cancer after reviewing the data concluded that shift work involving circadian disruption is probably carcinogenic to humans. The data for changes in melatonin secretion during shift work, the rate of hormone-related cancers in shift workers, and melatonin secretion rates in cancer patient are reviewed. The evidence for association between shift work and hormone-related cancer is suggestive, further research would be required to investigate the relationship between shift working and susceptibility to hormone-related diseases. Meanwhile, it is necessary to elaborate the most favorable shift work schedules with regard to reducing or eliminating chronodisruption.
