CITATION FUNCTIONS IN POLITICAL DISCOURSE

Abstract

The paper investigates citations in political discourse and the purpose of political discourse is determined. Two kinds of citation are defined. It is displayed that citation is presented in the given discourse both in explicit and implicit forms. The communicative strategies of the discourse addresser, namely, analysis of information organization, skilful incorporation of new information into the known one, using of stylistic devices, in particular, citations and references as well as contrast and vocabulary manipulating are in the focus of the research as well as the citations functions, their pragmatic potential and the impact on the addressee. It is underlined that persuasion can be more emotional form of speaking than exposition or argument, there is also no reason why persuasion cannot serve the equally sensible and honorable end of encouraging. It is deduced that the usage of citations and references serves for multiple emphases on values accepted by Ukrainian society; efforts are made by the addresser to make the addressee appreciate recognized ideals and spiritual enduring values. It is emphasized that citation does not affect the addresser’s discourse integrity and coherence because it is subordinated his conception and communicative intention to confirm with arguments his point of view. It is proved that political discourse with citations is characterized by a new level of coherence i.e., the category of intertextuality. The systematic method, which helps to investigate linguistic and stylistic phenomena not separately but in mutual interrelation with account of such categories as coherence, addresser and addressee, serves as the methodological basis for the given research. To solve the set task, the method of inductive and deductive analysis is used for theoretical generalization and formulation of conclusions, derivation of regularities of language stylistic means functioning, namely, citations and references to the authors.
