Citizenship: the birth of a legal doctrine

Abstract

In this article I try to outline the origin of the legal doctrine in the cities-states of ancient Greece (in particular, in Athens and Sparta), to clarify the essence and legal nature of the ancient concept of citizenship. The origins of the legal doctrine of cit- izenship, valid currently in the 21st century, might be found in two concepts of citizenship acquisition: ius sanguinis, dominant in Sparta, and ius soli, inherent in Athens. Up to my mind, an effective combination of both principles of citizenship acquisition is key element of the modern legal doctrine of citizenship of every democratic state.
